Ghost Money #1, Lion Forge
Thierry Smolderen and Dominique Bertail
"At the end of the year 2020, a team of military veterans are out to uncover a secret fortune built from the ashes of 9/11 so vast that it could disrupt the entire global economy. Their primary target is a beautiful young billionaire who crosses time zones with disconcerting ease." - Lion Forge

We have been given a Political Thriller here, set not too far into the future. If international political intrigue and rogue mercenary groups is your thing, this book would be an excellent choice. Smolderen and Bertail’s “set design” / vision for the not so distant world of tomorrow is both familiar and new. This added a sci-fi aesthetic to the overall narrative. Great start for this riveting tale.
Mister Miracle, DC Comics
Tom King and Mitch Gerads

“From the team behind THE SHERIFF OF BABYLON and the Hugo Award-nominated writer of Vision comes a unique new take on one of Jack Kirby’s most beloved New Gods.
“Scott Free is the greatest escape artist that ever lived. So great that he escaped Granny Goodness’ gruesome orphanage and the dangers of Apokolips to travel across galaxies and set up a new life on Earth with his wife, the former female fury known as Big Barda. Using the stage alter ego of Mister Miracle, he has made a career for himself showing off his acrobatic escape techniques. He even caught the attention of the Justice League, which counted him among its ranks.
“You might say Scott Free has everything...so why isn’t it enough? Mister Miracle has mastered every illusion, achieved every stunt, pulled off every trick—except one. He has never escaped death. Is it even possible? Our hero is going to have to kill himself if he wants to find out.
“Written by Tom King (BATMAN) and illustrated by Mitch Gerads (The Punisher), this is a MISTER MIRACLE unlike any you’ve read before.” – DC Comics

The celebration of Jack Kirby continues with DC’s Mister Miracle #1. This is Rebirth’s first appearance of Scott Free and Kirby’s New Gods. King’s and Gerads' vision for this character is surprisingly colossal. The book’s depth of story and visual composition both represent and reflect a darkness from our own world. A darkness yet to be seen within Mister Miracle's world.
I was really looking forward to this title and it completely blew my expectation’s expectations away. Gerads' use of color and composition are inventive, stunning and offer a wink and a nod to King Kirby. Tom King and Mitch Gerads have gone and done something real special here, go buy this book. Damn it, GO BUY THIS BOOK!

The Shadow #1, Dynamite Entertainment
Si Spurrier and Daniel HDR

"For the better part of a century the Shadow's sinister laughter brought the chill of fear to evil-doers - but in our modern times, the streets of Manhattan have gone largely silent. But he is not forgotten. Not by the people he's saved. Mary Jerez, is one of those people. The Shadow saved her from a horrifying school shooting - Mary knows all too well what evil lurks in the hearts of men. So when a horribly burnt man - incredibly strong and fierce, despite his terrible injuries- arrives under her care as a resident at the hospital - she believes she knows who he is, too. Is this mysterious man actually the Shadow - and with Mary's help, will evil-doers again know what it means to fear his terrible justice? Si Spurrier (X-Force, X-Men: Legacy, Judge Dredd) and Daniel HDR (Superman, Cyborg) bring the pulp icon into modern day in a tale full of deadly intrigue, gun-blazing action, and a study of the nature of evil!" - Dynamite Entertainment

This book hits hard and rolls forward without apology. The Shadow is the hero the mainstream boys in there underoos never get to be. He is the anti-hero we need whether we are aware of it or not. Spurrier and HDR have framed issue 1 well in a modern setting. The book moves the detective noir vibe aside slightly and introduces a much darker tone. This book/series introduces a new engaging energy to the story telling tradition of The Shadow.
